🔹 IELTS Speaking Practice
Part 1 (Personal Questions):
- Do you care about protecting the environment?
- What environmental problems are there in your country?
- What do you do to help the environment?
Sample Answers:
- Yes, I care deeply about the environment. I try to recycle and save electricity at home.
- In my country, air pollution and plastic waste are major issues, especially in cities.
- I always carry a reusable water bottle and avoid using plastic bags when shopping.
Part 2 (Cue Card):
Describe an environmental problem you are concerned about. You should say:
- What the problem is
- How it affects people
- What causes it
- And explain why you are concerned about it
Sample Answer:
I’d like to talk about plastic pollution. It’s one of the most serious environmental issues today. In Sri Lanka, plastic waste often ends up in rivers and beaches, harming marine life. This happens because people don’t recycle properly and industries produce too much plastic packaging. I’m very concerned because I’ve seen beautiful beaches covered in plastic bottles. I believe the government should encourage recycling and ban single-use plastics.
Part 3 (Discussion Questions):
- What can individuals do to reduce environmental damage?
- Do you think governments are doing enough to fight climate change?
- Should companies be responsible for protecting the environment?
🔹 IELTS Writing Task 2 Practice
Question:
Some people think individuals can do little to protect the environment. Others believe that it is the duty of individuals to make a big difference.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Sample Answer (Band 8 model):
There is no doubt that environmental protection has become a global concern. While some believe individual actions are too small to make a difference, others argue that every person plays a crucial role in solving environmental problems.
On one hand, environmental damage often occurs on a large scale due to industrial pollution, deforestation, and transportation. Therefore, it seems that only governments and international organisations have the power to enforce laws and regulations to reduce emissions and promote renewable energy.
On the other hand, individuals also play an important part. Simple actions such as recycling, saving energy, and avoiding plastic can have a powerful collective impact. Moreover, when citizens demand eco-friendly policies, governments are pressured to take stronger action.
In conclusion, both government and individual efforts are essential. Large-scale change requires political support, but without individual awareness and responsibility, real progress will be difficult to achieve.
🔹 Pronunciation & Speaking Tips
- Stress environmental words correctly: “en-vai-ron-ment”, “cli-mate change”, “re-new-able en-er-gy”
- Use linking phrases in speaking and writing: “On the other hand…”, “For instance…”, “As a result…”
- Avoid repetition: use synonyms like “issue”, “problem”, “challenge”, “crisis”
🔹 Homework
